Is it more important WHO you are or WHAT you are??

Was having lunch with fiona after lessons today, nice question to be put up by her
...
My initial thoughts are "it is important of what you are coz you are what you protray"
but well, lets face it, sometimes at some place for some reasons, you dun intro yourself
but rather you intro yourself as somebody's son, relative of whoever, friend of this so n so.
Is it that this world is just interested in you being somebody's so n so rather than who you reali are.
Do you get it?
So is it more important to let people know who you know than what you really know?
Is it that person who may seems insignificant in your life will turn out to be your saviour in your life?
